Paint It Black - for Thought Up Contest by theterriblezodin Paint It Black - for Thought Up Contest by theterriblezodin
"Darkest Moment"

Mrs Dorinda Carter was a young widow who had lost her husband suddenly.  They had had a strikingly companionate marriage for the nineteenth century, she a sophisticated London socialite and he "new money" from a northern industrialist background.  (Believe it or not, I created these characters before I read "North and South"!!)  With her only surviving family her cousin Charles, what will the bereaved Dorinda do?

To find out, you can hear my radio play, "The Mesmerist," here:  beta.prx.org/stories/55974

This came out a lot more Gothic and phantasmagoric than I had expected (probably because I was listening to Within Temptation's "The Silent Force" as I was drawing it!!

I have listened to the play! The production quality was very good- I loved the musical motif and the plot structure and the characters were well developed- and I enjoyed the melodrama thoroughly! My only CC is that, speaking as an English person, the accents did need working on. But apart from that- I was very impressed! :)

Thank you!  Yes, it was community radio drama in the American southwest, not the BBC, so although the actors were pros, they aren't called on to do English accents very often.  (And TBH, sometimes even seasoned BBC Rep actors' American accents are not absolutely perfect.)

However, CC taken on board and thanks for listening, I am really grateful.

This was my first radio drama, and I have a huge affection for it--nevertheless, it was written eight years ago so I think I have matured as a writer by now.

lol I know what you mean! I did a radio play last year with a variety of accents and silliness going on so I do sincerely admire what you've done with this production, the quality is very good. I think where the accent always trips up is on the word 'new' because we pronounce it differently. However, the mesmerist's accent was quite good I thought! :) Do you have any more radio plays that I could listen to?

Thank you!  Unfortunately I was not there for the actual recording (not that I'd be of any help with accents).  The French guy is actually French/American so that was some good casting!

Alas, none of my other plays have been produced yet.  A couple are "on option" at various independent audio drama production outfits but the producers haven't come through yet (it's been years, but, hey, we live in hope).  I've sent about 5 or 6 scripts (I've lost count) to bbc writersroom but they've all been rejected without any feedback.  Which really doesn't help at all!
